OfflineHi,
Admin asked me to put together some things to do in Los Angeles since I love my city. There really isn't much to do around the Airtel hotel, and LA is a car town, so it is best to have a car. Taxis are very expensive and buses aren't the most reliable in the world. The Subway, yes we have one, it isn't too bad, but has limited hours (ends at 1 or 2am,) limited routes and is usually 20-30 minutes between trains. However, if you want to get between Universal City and Hollywood and Downton LA, it isn't too bad.
- All the Amusement parks – Disneyland/California Adventure, Universal Studios, Knotts Berry Farm and Magic Mountain (the last two for you roller coaster lovers).
- Studio Tours – Univeral Studios, Warner Brothers, Sony Studio and Paramount do guided walking tours as well. Accomplice Hollywood sounds like a fun tour/scavenger hunt http://www.zerve.com/Accomplic…..A/Hllywood
- Star tours- where you go on a bus and drive past "stars" homes. You can pick up various tours from the shopping center at Hollywood and Highland (H&H), it's not a bad mall to visit to see the Walk of Fame and the Mann's Chinese Theater. Across the street is the Roosevelt Hotel which has a great outdoor bar and is a frequent star hangout. Avril Lavine just got into some altercation out front. TMZ, the gossip website, has a tour of famous celeb hangouts, haven't done it, but heard good things about it.
Places to go
- Hollywood Blvd, not that much to see, but better than it used to be. The crazy dress up folks in front of the H&H and in front of the Manns Chinese Theater are amusing. Check out the footprints and hand prints
- Rodeo Drive in Beverly HIlls for window shopping, where the 1% lives ( ) you are almost guaranteed to see a Ferarri.
- The Famous Sunset Strip – where many bands got started. The Whiskey A GoGo, The Roxy, The Key Club, The Viper Room, etc are all great little venues. If the weather is good, brunch at the area known as Sunset Plaza is good and you never know who you might see
- Places to star gaze – Chateau Marmount or Bar Marmount – you need reservations. The Standard Hotel. Asia De Cuba -has a great view and you can sometimes sneak into the Sky Bar from this restaurant. These are all pretty pricey
- Los Feliz/Silverlake – trendy area with cool little shops and restaurants. The Dresden Lounge is fabulous – hipsters, locals, tourists, nerds everyone is welcome and most nights Marty and Elayne play lounge music – if you've ever seen the movie Swingers- they are fun
- Griffth Park for a hike – you can hike all the way from Los Feliz blvd to the Griffth Observatory, Runyon Canyon for a hike – you never know who you'll run into or if you'll run into the paparazzi as they chase someone.
- Santa Monica – Third Street Promenade and Main Place Mall – shop to your hearts content a couple of blocks from the beach and enjoy the street performers. Lots of good food around. Santa Monica pier – where they fillmed to Love and Die in LA
- Venice Beach – Muscle Beach – the famous Venice Boardwalk. Well known for the street performers, roller skating guitar guy, chain saw jugling guy, etc. The area is grittier than Santa Monica, but pretty safe during the day, if you haven't lived in a big city, I'd stay away at night.
- Near Venice is Abbott Kinney – an artsy street with some great restaurants, galleries and did you know there are actual canals in Venice CA? Yes there are, between Washinton and Venice Blvd east of Pacific.
- Downtown LA – lots of Castle episodes are filmed in downtown LA- the Biltmore Hotel, Spring street alley, etc. I'd suggest visiting during the daytime & go to LA Live at night. Check out if Nokia Theater or Club Nokia have a band playing, check out the Grammy Museam or the Congo Room. Olvera Street/China Town/Union Station are right off the Red Line of the subway and nice little places to visit with less expensive food, lots of really good bars as well. Phillippes, across from Union Station has great french dip sandwiches (I think the pork dip is the best)
- Check out Hidden LA on facebook, they have a lot of off the beaten path ideas too.
I hope that gives you some ideas, please feel free to ask if you want to know anything specific. Or you need restaurant suggestions, I'm good at that. Just let me know a price range.

OfflineVIP tours (in LA) is a fantastic way to see LA and it was very affordable. When I was there in July, I saw ALOT of those places, had time to explore, shop, and just take in all the sites. There are quite a few tours and you have options as to if you want a half day tour, 3/4 day tour, or all day tour. The tour guides were awesome, very knowledgeable and mixed in the history of LA, along with ways to get around LA very easily and without spending a whole lot of money.
Since I was traveling by myself but wanted to see as much of LA as I could, I found this to be a great way to get around LA with a group of people who kinda kept an eye out for eachother.
It was well worth it and I highly recommend it.

OfflineAnd if you go to Venice Beach, this is a great place to watch the craziness, just off the boardwalk, (owned by a friend of mine for full disclosure purposes.) Also the nearby Hotel Erwin is also great for the area with a kick ass roof top bar.

OfflineGreat list! I've been living in LA for a few months now, and I haven't done half of these things. Now I've got some new ideas for upcoming days off.
I have, however, done all of the studio tours. I thought Paramount was the best, because I'm a classic film buff and they had the most related to that (also I told the guide this, and she went out of her way to point out relevant info). Warner's was nice, too, but more focused on TV than movies I thought.
Six Flags is fun, but you'll want a full day there. I went to a private party (no lines!) recently and couldn't see half the park in 6 hours. Same as Disneyland, I'm sure.
And yeah, you really need to have a car in LA.
I would also highly recommend trying to get tickets to see the various late night shows that tape around here, like Jimmy Kimmel, Jay Leno, and Craig Ferguson. They only tape weeknights, but its pretty easy to get tickets (even last minute) and they're free!

OfflineEh. The best thing about LA is that it's close to Santa Barbara. You can drive north to SB and there's some amazing food and hiking. Or whatever. You can also go out to Catalina Island from just north or south of LA. It's an inexpensive way to have a really nice vacation. the Norton Simon art museum is in Pasadena – worth visiting. But, back to Santa Barbara, wine tasting in Santa Barbara is as good as it gets for those who like fermented grapes! If anyone is interested I can make recommendations for this area…

OfflineIf anyone is in town on Thursday night, from 5 pm til midnight, there is the Downtown LA Artwalk, all the galleries stay open late, there are gourmet food trucks, street performers, etc. It's actually pretty fun,and packed with people. Spring and 5th is kind of epicenter for it. And since it is getting a bit chillier and we are wimps in LA, maybe it won't be so overflow packed, that would be ok w/me
Exiled-feel free to send me questions, I love my hometown, I know where all the good ethnic restaurants too
Lv2vnsb-I love SB, Solvang, and SLO, the whole central coast is awesome

OfflineGreat lists so far! Couple of things to add that I'm not sure anyone has mentioned: Farmer's Market/The Grove, 3rd and Fairfax in Hollywood. The Grove is newer shops and restaurants – my favorite part is the older section – Farmer's Market, which is food stalls, shops, just lots of fruits, vegetables, and a real favorite still for locals. ALSO: quirky and not for everyone, but in keeping with the crime aspect of "Castle" — how about visiting "Skeletons in the Closet", the shop that the L.A. County Coroner's office runs? In L.A., on Mission Rd. or Blvd., I believe – open M-Fri. Been awhile since I've been there — very unusual and like I said, kind of in keeping with the whole crime-solving theme!
Great restaurant in my neighborhood of Studio City — Firefly, on Ventura Blvd. Tiny bit pricey but not bad…can do some "star-gazing" sometimes, good food, nice place – you'd have to go to their web site and get exact address because it's not noticeable from the boulevard – covered in ivy and private.
Venue for the convention is good, from what I recall…but neighborhood is NOT good (trust me, had a relative live in the area right around there for years). So not good to walk around at night. Best to leave the area and go elsewhere in the Valley or Hollywood or anywhere else.
So excited for everyone attending the convention- have a wonderful time!

OfflineThis is a great list! I've heard of some of them…but the LA Artwalk is news to me! Check out HipSwap.com if you are into the kind of stuff you would see at the LA Artwalk. It's basically a 24/7 online L.A. yard sale with tons of stuff you will never see anywhere else. It's also a great place to meet like minded people! Thanks for the list!

OfflineI am so excited by this thread! I will be in LA for the first time in my life (and I am an older adult) in April and will spend a couple of days before boarding the Disney Wonder to Hawaii. I was wondering what to do…where to go. I will print this all out and read carefully. Unless it has been mentioned, are there any good "Haunted Hollywood" tours?? I appreciate all the Castle locations!!
