I know that there are some veteran vidders here as well as some people who are just starting out. With that in mind, I thought it might be fun to write up a blog post that includes some of my own editing tricks/suggestions as well as a few really stellar fan vids that I've come across over the years for inspiration.

Please feel free to stop by and check it out…How to edit a great fan video

Well, honestly the simplest way I've found to get my clips is to just download the entire episodes through one of the torrent sites. I don't feel too much guilt over that since I already watch the episodes off air and I'll be the first in line to buy the DVDs when they come out. That said, since torrenting is generally frowned upon, I can't exactly write a full blog post on the subject of how it is done… I'm not even sure I should be posting even this much about it to the forums.

If you don't want to torrent, another option is to rip the DVD… which honestly isn't a lot more "legit" than downloading a torrent and a heck of a lot more labour intensive in my opinion.

After that you'll need some video editing software and a reasonably high power computer to run it. I know popular options are things like Vegas, iMovie or Windows Movie Maker. Personally I use an ancient copy of Adobe Premiere Pro since it was what I learned on.

Most of my tech resources for fan videos are half a decade old. Perhaps someone else knows of a good 'getting started' sort of article…?
