Ashley, technically I'm from Vallejo, but during the summer I tutor Language and run as yard supervisor for the kids at a school in Oakland. And I go to Walnut Creek all the time for the great foods (had California Pizza Kitchen for the first time there–YUM) and the Apple store, of course ;)
Ooh I know Vallejo, but only for Six Flags…
Aw, that's so nice that you do that… sounds like a great summer job :) Yea! Of course the Apple store… I love that place… so much shiny technology! It's like my dream, lol. Hey, good choice with CPK! Yep, go to Downtown WC all the time, movies, food, shopping… it's the best :D

Love all the avatars. Beautiful work.
Jumping in to say I'm in Modesto since you're talking about Walnut Creek, Oakland, and Vallejo.

Might have to go try this one on right away actually…

Thanks muchly, Ashley!! I am so excited that I finally got it to work!
lilmac, I don't mind given tutorials (now that I remembered how ), but it kinda matters if you have the right programs to do it. I've been using Adobe Image Ready but I'm sure there are other ways to make animations.

Yep, it's all about the programs.
I used to use Imageready, it's awesome :)
With Photoshop CS4 (actually I think CS3 also has it), it's all integrated into Photoshop, no more Imageready for me.
Takes a bit of getting used to, but the integration is nice.
I'd help too, but I'm using a Mac running Snow Leopard. Do you have a PC or Mac, lilmac?

Unfortunately I haven't been able to find any free programs that make animated icons… at least none that turn out very well.
But hey, I'd be more than willing to take requests if you've got something specific in mind!

lilmac, you might want to try GIMP. It's a free program, just like Photoshop. I'm not sure if it does animations, but it's worth a try!
Jamz–Modesto! I don't go there as often, but I did have a soccer tournament or two there. I remember thinking, WHY is it so HOT here?! Woo! Northern California is where it's at!
Ashley, I've been in love with Six Flags ever since it was Marine World. My mother used to work there in the nursery with all of the baby animals, and when my sister and I were really young my grandma would take us over there to visit. I wasn't too happy when they turned it into an amusement park, but I LOVE rollercoasters, so I eventually broke down and try to go every summer, lol.
Anybody willing to give a .gif avatar tutorial for a Photoshop user?

Luna, as far as I know, there's no way to make an animated .gif in Photoshop without ImageReady. Now if yours is intergrated like Ashley was talking about, then that's different. If you just want to save an image as a .gif, that's easy. What is it specifically that you're wanting to do? I'd love to help, if I can.

Yeah that's the only plus side. I'll just have to wait until the holidays and hope someone will get me a photo shop program.

Luna, it's ridiculously hot here. It's why I escape to San Francisco as much as possible. Berkley and Santa Cruz too. I love Six Flags as well but it's been a while since I've been there.
I have no gift at making icons so I have to depend on all you makers out there. We appreciate them.

I made a video tutorial–it's brief– but shows you how to make a basic gif, or at least how I make mine. And with Castle clips.
Watch in fullscreen so you can see everything :P
However, it's with Photoshop CS4 (will probably work with CS3 too) and Quicktime X on a Mac. I talk about ImageReady too, and how you could do it with other programs (besides Quicktime X) on a PC.
I used to have GIMP, but I found it frustrating. Then again, I came from using Photoshop first, so maybe someone who hasn't used PS might find it easier than I did

Greeny, I have PS CS3, and it does have the ability to make animated .gifs. I think CS2 did, too, since that's what my friend had used.
Jamz–Oh man, I get lost in San Francisco EVERY TIME I visit. First my friend (tho Photoshop one, actually) and I were trying to come from San Rafael, and then ended up going through the Golden Gate bridge (so so SO the wrong way) and had to drive all the way through SF to get to the Bay Bridge. Took 2 hours, we got lost so much. Then another time friends and I were trying to leave SF, and ended up at the GG bridge again. Happened again a third time months later, and I'm pretty sure I hate the Golden Gate now, lol. But I love Berkely. Next time you Bay Area people are there, you've got to go to this little sea shack if you like crab. It's off College Ave., and has the best cooked crab that's been marinated in garlic butter. Of course, it's $20 a pop, but so worth it ;) .
Ashley–thank you! I'm so excited to try it out. Hopefully I'll have something within the week :D . As for GIMP, I had it before PS so I didn't notice any of its shortcomings. As a matter of fact, I'd just graduated from Photofiltre, which is pretty much a glorified Paint program with a few minor special effects. So GIMP was fantastic for me. Then my friend let me borrow her Photoshop CD and I've been in love ever since. You know what they say! Once you go Photoshop, you never go…to anything else, anyway. ;)
Got a few more avs for you all:

Ashley, that was a GREAT tutorial. Things work a little different on my end- I use a PC and .mpgs instead of .movs, but I had been wondering about adjusting the brightness/contrast for the whole .gif at once. And doing it frame by frame was making me want to chuck the whole thing. Thanks for that tip- I can't wait to try it out! The background idea is pretty nifty, but I didn't understand why you needed to crop out the space in the middle when the background layer was on the bottom. Maybe I missed something…
Luna, sounds like you're better off following Ashley's tutorial. My version of Photoshop doesn't do that- I have to use ImageReady. It works very similar, but a little bit different and I would likely just confuse you. Good luck with it! I can't wait to see what you come up with.

LOVE this one!
Yeah, thanks Greeny! Anything I could do to help :)
Hmm… you raise a good point about the background. I dunno why I do that! It's just the way I've always done it :P
Either way, you make total sense, since it is the background, lol.

Nuts. My version of ImageReady doesn't seem to have that adjustment layer feature… can't change the contrast on the whole .gif. Bother, bother, bother…

Do you have Photoshop as well?
In CS2 there was a button at the bottom of the toolbar (on the side) that says "Send to Photoshop" (from ImageReady), then you should be able to do it.
Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Brightness/Contrast

No problem :)
There should be another button in Photoshop that says "Send to ImageReady", so you can then optimize it for the internet.
Good luck! Can't wait to see what you're making
