About icon speeds: Different Internet browsers play animated GIFs at different speeds. I use Safari and Chrome for Mac. I know that Firefox has a similar speed to Google Chrome – which is much faster than Safari plays icons. Not sure about IE8, but I'm guessing it's similar.

Does the speed of my current icon work for you? I tried to make that one kosher for all browsers. .09 seconds/frame seems to get the job done.

I made a .gif from "Fool Me Once" that has the "two by two, hands of blue" reference from "Firefly".

Farscapefan, it's a long process, but I use Photoshop CS4 and Quicktime X for Mac.

To make sure I've actually learned this, and to make sure the description is complete I repeat the process (and refine it as I go along):

this is done on a PC, not Mac. Adobe Flash and Adobe Photoshop can be downloaded for a 30 day trial from adobe.com. I have the CS4 package, with Flash Professional and Photoshop Extended. I get it through work, lucky me. And this description I will use at work next year. So much fun to combine job training with Castle.

so I guess one can exchange the www. with kick

This gives me a choice of file format to download into, listed in the top row above the video.

I'd choose AVI if I could, but since I can't in this case, I go for FLV – a solution for those with Adobe Flash.

click the green GO to the right, then right-Click on the blue DOWN that appears after a little while, and Save target as … wherever you want it.

If you can save directly into AVI, this is the part you can skip:_____
Open Flash, create a new file.
File – Import Video – browse to the video you want. Embed, next, don't include audio, next, and finish. Make background the same as video, center in both directions.
File – Export movie – AVI.

Open Photoshop, do not create new file, go directly to File – Import – video frames to layers
choose the avi file, load, Limit to every 2 frames (or it will be too slow), and make frame animation. choose part to import (I struggled a bit with this, the "slider" was invisible, but a little extra is ok, there's a limit on 500 frames. Doble-clicked on the video to make it start. When it got close to where I wanted it, I double-clicked to stop it, then held shift and dragged the invisible slider past the part I wanted), ok.

window – animation (Frames) (if you don't see a lot of frames, but have Animation (Timeline) choose three squares to the lower right to go to frame view)
Remove frames you don't want (shift to select several)
Selct all frames, choose crop tool, and select part you want. Image size – width = 100 pixels.

File – Save for web & devices, as gif.
Test by opening the gif file. If it's too fast or slow, edit the time on every frame in photoshop (select all, change one = change all)

Done.

If you want text and stuff on slides, open the layer window, and draw on each layer (copy when applicable).

Result:

OK, it's not perfect (well, it's my FIRST ever animated gif), 'cause you can see a milisecond of the next scene at the end of it, but it doesn't hurt much, I think.
