First off, in reading these interviews – and others too, I am not to hot on the idea of adding another cast member. Stana mentions in several of the interviews that she would like to have a gay guy friend outside of work. All I'm saying is that "8 is enough" – we already have a strong cast besides Beckett and Castle: Ryan & Esposito, Martha and Alex, Captain Montgomery and Lanie. There have been hints that Jenny (Ryan's GF) will be making more apperances. I like the idea of Beckett's dad – we have already met him and he is a part of the story (his wife's / Kate's mom's murder). At the present time we have enough characters and stories without adding a new character. However, having a gay guy friend would help explain some of Becketts wardrobe.

I think that this gay friend is not completely a red herring, but not a new cast member. There's maybe an episode where the victim's friend/relative is this guy and there will be some more personal talk between them, like with the daughter in "Home is where the heart stops" (if this will be a two-part one, there would be time and place for this one). I think that after this the character would be like Meredith: we know that he exists, he is mentioned sometime, but appears very rarely.

 

Beside, I think, or more precisely feel, that this character would not come easily with Castle. Not because he would be homofob, but I think he is very territorial. A man around her love interest, even if he is gay would bring out stingy remarks from Castle.
