OfflineAfter reading the new TV Guide article featuring our favorite dramady Castle, I am thinking maybe Nathan Fillion was on to something. He joked that if he had won the lottery he would buy commercials for Castle to help get the word out.
Now I am just one person, but I know there are a lot of us out there who are frustrated at the lack of advertising where Castle is concerned.. And there is power in numbers. I don't know about there rest of you, but I'd be willing to put my money where my mouth is and contribute to help get things rolling.
I think Castle had the potential to be HUGE if we can just get the word out.
Just a thought.

OfflineI actually loved hearing that, but it also concerned me. You don't want to go out in public too much criticizing the network that runs your most successful show. But since ABC doesn't have too many successful dramas, especially police procedurals, I guess it wouldn't hurt. Plus, Nathan himself has such a following, that it might actually be a good thing.

OfflineI actually didn't find anything wrong with that. Nathan and Marlowe have been a little worried about the lack of publicity and this was their chance to say something about it.
I can understand why ABC have cut down a little on their promotion for Castle of late. The show is in its 3rd season with a dedicated fan following and has been renewed for a 4th season already. I would also like to believe that given the lack of promotion, the network would have lowered their expectations in terms of the ratings that the show gets compared to previous seasons.
That said, I agree that Castle being a light hearted cop procedural has the ability to attract more casual viewers than other medical/crime procedural dramas. So, a little advertising from time to time (like over this highly anticipated two-parter) could help add to its already phenomenal fan following.

OfflineI can kinda see what you mean about ABC cutting back on its promotion of Castle because it's dependable and its renewed, but I can't say I agree with it. If they get complacent, they're likely to lose viewers as I think it has what with all the off and on new episode/repeats. But, if Castle is doing well while other shows (like Detroit 187 I read recently) aren't, it makes sense for them to put their resources into saving those shows. I'm sure they did the same thing with Castle when it was in its first season and look at the payoff.
I also read recently how since ABC has relatively few police procedurals that are doing as well as Castle, they feel that it's not worth it to promote the show unless it is during a police procedural where more of their target demographic is likely to be watching. I can see this strategy, but it never hurts to look outside the box. Castle is such a fun show that people seem curious about so why not promote it while comedies are airing or something like that.

OfflineThere was a longer comment after the article in which an opposite opinion was told. That with the best lead-in of the ABC shows (DWTS) and ads in all of their main shows, Castle get maybe not more but better promotion than other shows on the channel. As I don't see them, I can not judge, but it is one of the oldest marketing dilemma in case of a diversified "product range" and limited budget: put more effort behind a successful "brand" to squeeze the most money from that and let the weaker brands survive if they can or being happy with the revenue level of the better ones as they are and trying to bring up the not so good ones? Seems ABC follows the second path, and as long as they are satisfied in this way, we has to be satisfied as well.

OfflineI second the idea of putting Castle comercials durring the comedies or other shows. I watched Castle because of all the comericals for it that were on Hulu before the 1st season started. I'm not a cop show watcher so I dont watch for that. All those season 1 commericals were never about the case, they were always about the banter and jokes, I tuned in to see that… and anyone can be a fan of that. [Image Can Not Be Found]

OfflineI think they'd be wise to pony up some ad dollars on USA network or TNT during one of their NCIS, SVU or other procedural marathon's. Those get a fair amount of eyes, and they are of a similar genre. I've seen other networks advertise their broadcast shows during these cable reruns, don't know why ABC doesn't. NCIS didn't become a big hit until it started running on USA in syndication. It had ratings only slightly better than Castle before it started in syndication. I think alot of people watch USA network, saw the show in reruns and then started watching it during its regular timeslot. Or even like some of my friends, they program their DVR for a show no matter the channel or time zone and their DVR's found NCIS during normal broadcast. Or even run the Castle pool table promo on ESPN
Personally, I think that Castle would do well in syndication on USA network ("characters welcome") and could garner alot of extra viewers in its normal time slot from those who'd actually learn about the show from a syndication run (just like NCIS).

I completely agree with this, and this is how I found Bones originally (although it was already in syndication at that time).
I also agree with HanakoGal about promotion during the ABC comedies. I was watching Modern Family last night and wondering why they never promote Castle during it or other parts of the comedy block. The comedy in Castle might really grab a segment of those viewers, and that show in particular has one of the best (if not the best) demo on ABC. It just frustrates me to have seen 1 or 2 ads for Off the Map during the ABC comedies when that show is almost certain to be canceled at this point (and is more of a hardcore drama anyway). Why not throw resouces behind a show that still has potential to grow and needs to be strong given the weakness of much of the rest of ABC's schedule (especially at 10pm). Just because Castle is in its 3rd season and already renewed doesn't mean ABC can afford to lose ground with it. They need more than just their top 4 performers.

OfflineI'm surprised that they want to promote it mainly with other police procedurals. I always thought Castle was being considered first and foremost as a comedy show. I think it's Seamus Dever who said they have about 1 episode out of 4 that is really more serious than the others. While that is not exactly the way I see it, I think he's not far from the truth. So… that kind of surprises me that ABC doesn't jump on the opportunity to promote Castle when other comedy shows air.

OfflineI still think this comes down to a cost to benefit ratio. Castle doesnt really need to be the #1 show in all of television. It just needs (wants) to be #1 in its timeslot. To do that, they need what, another 2million viewers to do it consistently? Is the benefit of 2million viewers enough to justify the cost it would take to get it?
I dont know the answer to that, but it seems like ABC sees it not worth it.

OfflineIf we were talking about any other show, I could maybe see not justifying the cost based on just being the best of the Monday night lineup… but this is Castle! And I think Castle has the potential to be bigger than just Monday nights. It is great writing and great acting at it's best! The show is unique in that it transends generations, sex, and doesn't step on people's toes in an attempt to push an agenda. My whole family watches, its our favorite family night activity. Where else do we find that on tv right now?

ABC has just posted a shorter, 15s version of the 3x17 promo on their site, so it's probably the sign they want to make a more active campaign for this episode.
I hope so!

I agree with this as well. Though as Jack Skellington said, I'm sure the network won't want to risk money on advertising a show where it is not likely to capture the target demographic Castle looks for. I say as a comedy-drama it needs to be advertised some during ABC's most successful comedies, like Modern Family. And it makes me nevous when I get the impression that the network isn't worried about the show. It cannot be complacent in such a cut throat industry. When you start forgetting about a popular show and paying moe attention to others, you risk turnong off the viewers.
