OfflineThat is an interesting campaign, I bet it would work really well on the US as well and would probably be more cost effective as well.
I think where advertising is missing the mark is that when they do advertise, it's more of the procedural that is shown. And while that aspect of the show is great, it's not what attracted me to the show. It was the whitty banter, the swordplay, the aspects of this relationship between Castle and Beckett that caught my attention and still keeps me coming back for more. Think about it, if Castle or Beckett was gone, this show would just be a crime story but the magic would be gone. The interaction, the dance is what drives this thing, so why not market that!?!

OfflineSomething else occurred to me (to go with my cost versus benefit thought above) and this could be a complete stretch but I wonder if it isnt to ABC's benefit that the show doesnt totally skyrocket. We know Nathan makes $100K per episode and I am sure Stana makes the same or close to it. The women of Desperate Housewives make $400K per episode and right now are only a few million viewers above Castle (they have been declining since their heyday of 20+mil viewers and are now around 12mil) but the production costs are through the roof. I wonder if you get to the point where production costs far outweigh ad revenue.
Castle seems (keyword) to be a relatively inexpensive show to produce so while it may not be blowing the ratings away, it is still profitable. If they were to, say double the viewers, would their production costs triple? Would the ad revenue triple too?
Again, it might be a stretch, but it was a thought.

OfflineDH makes $400k or so for a 30 second ad, Castle is$130k. DH may only have a few million more in total viewers, but is much higher in the all important 18-49 demo, more than 1.0 in demo point, much more important to ABC. ABC would most likely not raise Nathan or Stana's salary right away. This is a business, they're always interested in making more money….

I show DH bringing in $210K for a 30second spot.

OfflineI think a facebook ad campaign is a great idea. Inexpensive, reaches the target demographic for the show, and has the potential to reach lots of new viewers. I hope they do something similar to the UK plan here.

OfflineJoe, m_hanh:
The shows like Castle or DH are a revenue makers only in case if they reach the syndicate broadcast level, which is around 100 episode. There are exceptions of course, but that's how the MIB at the Accounting Dept. of the channels are planning. The original success of the show (on its parent channel) is important for two reasons: a) to make it able to survive the necessary 5-6 seasons and b) to raise the price what can be asked for the syndicate broadcasting. The low ratings predict a low selling price and that's what digs the grave. The additional loss what comes from the underachievement in the ratings (the channel has to give extra ad spots for free) is marginal comparing to the other. If I remember well, the TBBT was sold for 1 million dollar per episode to each buyer.
About the salaries: though it should look very unfair, I highly doubt that Stana's paycheck is anywhere near the 100k, more to the 35-40 ore even below. The contracts are for 5, or more often for 7 years and the per episode salary is fixed during this period. Not fixed in the initial amount but fixed how much raise the channel gives after each season, achieving certain rating averages, etc., but these depend on the fame and name of the individual actor. Three years ago Stana Katic was nobody in Hollywood, she was definitely not in the position to fight for more money – in fact she told in an interview last year that only now she is starting to be in a position where she can pick or not pick an offered role. It is a very rare occasion, like at the TBBT when it is such a success that the actors has the power to achieve a significant rise during the contractual period. Castle is not a show like that.

OfflineWell I was pretty sure I was reaching, but somewhere in my mind it made sense at the time!! I did know that the big money was in syndication. I was just trying to come up with a logical explanation as to why ABC doesnt promote the show more. Since I figured everything could be traced back to dollars and cents (or sense as the case may be) it was the only thing remotely logical I could come up with.
When I mentioned Stana "makes the same or close to it" I was pretty much guessing and trying to not sound insulting. I was already hearing in my mind "what makes you think she makes so much less", though I did know she was virtually unknown not that long ago. To be honest I had never heard of her until I saw her in a CSI: Miami episode. When I saw the teasers for the pilot I thought "hey she looks familiar!" (not really a fan of the newer Bond movies, but I do think I want to see Stilletto)
Anyway, back to square one in trying to figure out why ABC doesnt promote the show more.

OfflineHey watch it, I'm one of the MIB in the Finance dept, well not at a studio, and more a WIB. Everyone hates us in accounting and finance, we're always the bad guys….
I think the bottom line is ultimately good, they're happy with how Castle is doing and ABC just has a lot of other problems in their schedule, so they have to spend their dollars elsewhere and just let Castle do its thing. I just think there are some relatively inexpensive things they could do to promote the show to the demo to garner better ratings. The Facebook one sounds like a no brainer, Twitter lets you "promote" a trending topic, Tumblr promotion, etc. I don't even hear of Nathan or Stana doing call in's to local radio shows, something that ABC promotion should be pushing for, and as far as I know is free. Heck they have a good relationship with Oprah, they could push to have Castle on the Oprah show. (though I doubt they have time to fly to Chicago)
Regarding salaries, there is discretion involved there and they sometimes give preemptive raises when there are big disparities. Even though the actors are bound by contracts, the show runners/studios can increase salaries outside of contractual terms, to reward, to keep the peace, etc… But it is generally bound by "as long as the finances make sense". Have a bunch of friends in finance dept at studio's (unfortunately none at Disney/ABC) , its a fascinating business.
80 episodes is kind of the new minimum now for syndication, (but 100+ gets you a better deal) and Castle should have 80 episodes at the end of Season 4.

OfflineNow I understand why Castle has 24 episodes a year… since the first season was 10 episodes it needed 24 to get to 80 in 4 years… well, since the 4th season is already a given, then I guess syndication is in the cards and everybody is happy.
I think Castle has a vey good reputation, it's often talked about as a "smash hit" in the media…

OfflineI'm very disappointed in ABC's promotion of Castle in the US. We've gotten one promo, aired two times, and it's 16 seconds of the Knockdown kiss. Yes, an amazing moment, but shouldn't they be airing promos of tomorrow's episode?

You're right. They should be pushing tomorrow night's episode. I guess I should be happy that ABc has run any promos at all, but I can't help by wonder if they'd get a bunch more people to watch tomorrow night if they aired an episode-centered promo.
