Laura Prepon Guest Stars on ABC's 'Castle'

Actress chats about her hair color and what lies ahead for her in the new year

By Lie Shia Ong
MSN TV

She was Donna, the redhead turned blonde from "That '70s Show." Now, Laura Prepon is changing her hair color again as she guest stars on the Jan. 3 episode of ABC's "Castle." We chatted with the actress about her role and about what lies ahead for her in 2011.

Bing: Watch episodes and clips of 'Castle'

MSN TV: Tell us a little bit about your character on "Castle."

Laura Prepon: Basically, I was a fan of the show already. The casting director on "Castle" — we worked together on a show called "October Road." The character came up, and she asked me to do it, and after I read the script, it was so great, I was like, "Oh my God, of course I will." Basically, Castle is a writer and the lead of his books is Nikki Heat, and she's based off Beckett, who's his partner on the show. I play an actress from Hollywood who's cast to play Nikki Heat. I  fly to New York to follow Beckett around because my character is very Method. I learn her mannerisms and kind of emulate her in a funny way. I'm in the entire show with her and Castle. It's really fun because I get to play up the cliché Hollywood actress things.

Because you're totally not the cliché Hollywood actress in real life, right?

I like to think I'm not. I don't really hang out with people who are, so it's fun to be semi-diva.

Did you have to wear a wig, or did you dye your hair for the role? Because you start off blonde and then end up brunette.

It was actually a wig, and it was cool because I have been actually thinking about going brunette, so it's great because now I can see myself on the screen with brown hair. I show up on the set as a blonde, but then halfway through, because I start studying Beckett, I start dressing like her and I show up with a brown wig.

Are you going to change your real hair color soon, then?

I don't know. I'm kind of a little impulsive, so maybe the next time I'm getting my hair done, I'm going to say, "Screw it! Just turn it brown." I have been thinking about doing it for a while, but I haven't been able to do it because I'm working on a project that requires me to be blonde.

What was it like working on set with the rest of the 'Castle' crew?

They are so cool. Nathan (Fillion) is one of the funniest, most humble guys I've ever worked with and Stana (Katic) is such a sweetheart. We had so much fun. It was really long hours. I'm used to those hours because the last drama I did was the same: 16-hour days and stuff. When you're working with people for so long, it's amazing when there's no divas, no negative energy. It was just so cool and we just laughed all day, and we just got to know each other. They're just great people.

Is the episode in January the only one you're guest-starring in?

It's actually really flattering because after people saw the show and after we all worked together, they told me, "We have to have you back! We have to do a show where we come to L.A." The only way they can really get my character back on there is if they come to L.A. They have been talking about that: where a murder case takes them to Los Angeles. We'll see what happens, but if my work schedule permits it, I'd love to come back.

A lot of your fans know you from "That '70s Show." Do you have a favorite memory from working on that show?

That's eight years of memories! That's a big one. Honestly, when I think back to it and when I think back on the show, it was about the people I worked with. We had such a blast and we were such a family. It's rare: You hear about some pretty bad stories, about people who get stuck working with other people who they don't just mesh with. We were brand new, and the fact that we were such good friends — we grew up together. When the show was on, I never watched it, because I don't really like watching myself right after I shoot something, but now I catch an episode and I'm just like, "Oh my God, it's such a good show." I'm just so fortunate to have been part of a show like that.

With 2011 right around the corner, do you have any New Year's resolutions?

I have a lot of resolutions! My friends and I always name the year. 2009 was the year of change, and there was a lot of change. 2010 was the year of the bold. We all had to make really bold moves. We're actually trying to figure out what to name 2011. I think it's going to be the year of "moving up." I need to look up "unstoppable" in the thesaurus and see what else comes up. It's just taking everything you have and moving it to the next level. Because I do so many different things than acting, it's just bringing everything up to a whole other level.

This show airs Mondays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.

Nice little interview. I like that she was already a fan of Castle before being on the show and sounds like we are in for a fun treat.

Thanks for posting that. It was a really nice interview.

Interesting. I would have thought she'd be locked in for the episode(s) in LA.
