I know, digusting isn't it?  "Castle" has been the closest North America mainstream has come to doing a really good TV mystery series in years. "Defying Gravity" is a horrible cross between a soap opera and a certain sci-fi film that shall remain nameless because it was *that* bad.  I no idea what goes through the minds of these TV execs sometimes. The worst case I've seen I have never forgiven my local CTV station for replacing "Babylon 5" with "Home Boys from Outer Space"–a lame Hollywood rip-off of "Red Dwarf" that tanked immediately (and good riddence).
