I'm going to try to translate
Enjoy.
Has your life changed now that you're the lead star of a television series?
It differs from playing second roles, like Katherine Mayfair's (Dana Delany) husband in DH, who disappears after one season….(laughs). In terms of telling a story, the smaller roles have as much valour/merit. The story can't work without their presence. You have a function, whether you interpret a main character or not. The only adjustment are the hours you make. In general we have an average of 14h/day, 5 days a week when filming "Castle". I try not to complain, but sometimes I can't help it (laughs).
You've fought hard to get this role. What attracted you so much about this character?
Castle is cool, elegant and blatantly excited by what he's doing. I understand that enthousiasm because I too love my profession and I've been lucky to get this job on a series that works. I've learned to appreciate the faults of my characters, frankly, Castle is far from perfect. He doesn't know when to shut up, doesn't realise when he goes too far and is a bit too egocentric for my tastes. But I don't condemn him, it's understandable that he reacts that way. His mother (Susan Sullivan) is, one can say, a little bit too frivolous and his daughter (Molly Quinn) is the only responsible adult of the family. There has never been a male role model when he grew up. He doesn't know how to act as a man. Immediately, he acts like a kid. It's a formidable guy but I could only stomach him in small doses. Luckily, the public appreciates non-exemplary people. I think they recognise themselves in them.
How do you see the relationship progress between Castle and Beckett (Stana Katic)?
Everybody knows the impact a relationship between them would have. But the series wouldn't survive it very long… The best thing to do is to let them play their little spiel. It's certain that they respect each other, but they are complete opposites. He gets her completely crazy and she's in a corner emotionally, so there's a long way to go.
Castle's appartment is very chic…
It's indeed verly elegant and that doesn't surprise me one bit coming from him. If I had the same appartment in NY, I'd never leave. My house in LA is deifinitely more simple.
What do you think about the way Castle raises his daughter?
I like it…At least, I think it works. His daughter is a typical adolescent who rebels agains parental authority. When the parents have clout, the child wants to be forgotten, when they're poor, it fights to succeed professionally. In this instance, the laissez-faire irresponsibility of Castle forces his daughter to take control of herself. Luckily, we will discover that when he's with this back against the wall, what's most important to him is here in this appartment with his mother and daughter. The upcoming events will show who he really is and will allow the viewers to forgive him acting like an idiot most of the time.
