I'm sure he'll bring more depth to the self-absorbed, cocky prick I predict the series has written him to be.
It does sound like Castle has been written this way, but that's one of the amazing talents Nathan has…the ability to bring warmth, and humor to otherwise unlikable characters. I mean, Malcolm Reynolds wasn't exactly a warm and fuzzy kinda guy. Like you said, and I agree, Nathn will bring a depth and and also redeemable quality that not all other actors could pull off.

I suspect we'll see Richard Castle turns out to be a "shallow on the outside-deep on the inside" kinda character – much like the Bruce Willis character on Moonlighting – I think one of the hints of this is that he has a teenage daughter at home, and he's just allowed his mother to move in as well…

OfflineDoes he say it's like Moonlighting? (The video won't play for me, I'm on dial-up, my comuter only cooperates with Youtube for streaming videos.
) I loved Moonlighting, but I have to admit that worries me a bit. I'm sure things won't go quite that far, or self-destruct so spectacularly. ha ha
I'm not worried about Nathan's character being obnoxious, he's far too charming, it always shines through.
He says “a little bit of Murder She Wrote meets Moonlighting and I'll be playing Jessica Fletcher and Bruce Willis, leaning on the Bruce Willis side” “he's helping a homicide dectective that he's very fond … solve murders…”
Judging by what I know of the pilot – it won't be so over the top as Moonlighting was, but more of a drama infused with humour along the way.

OfflineWow! Is it that there has been no one posting on this thread since 2008? Hmm… So much more to say about how Castle comes off on the show and the way Fillion treats his character. Yes, he is cocky. But see that's part of his charm. I wouldn't say he's self absorbed but I have only been watching the show since February 2010 so I have missed a lot. Will I go back and watch the earlier episodes? Dunno. I hate to backtrack over shows and movies.
The way I see Castle in the show is the perfect compliment to Becket. I am not saying that they are right for each other regarding an intimate relationship but I like them as a crime solving team. Interesting to take crime writing novelist and throw him in with a detective.
I think Nathan Fillion plays Castle so well and really I couldn't think of anyone else handsome and smart ass enough to play that role.
He he……as far as Mal goes, well, I think Nathan is perfect in that role too. The cocky fighter without the warm fuzzies!
Just enjoy watching Nathan break out Castle every Monday night!

Welcome JulieFS to this forum.
You are spot-on: Nathan is perfectly cast as Castle, C & B are an amazing crime solving team (her old school approach, but thinking outside the box; his thinking about the story, as a writer)
Their relationship has really grown. There's a good chance that you would enjoy watching earlier episodes, both from season 1 and early season 2.
Isn't it greaaaat about there being a season 3 (full 22 episodes, too !!!!!!)
