OfflineI'm going to try to do this with as much tact as possible for fear of being trampled by a bunch of Browncoats. It bothers me that Nathan continuely tries to reference Firefly in Castle episodes and seems to favor those fans as opposed to fans of his other projects. I get that he loves Firefly and maybe it's his favorite, but I do feel discounted for not having an interest in sci-fi. I happen to be a fan of many of Nathan's other projects and one in particular has emerged as my latest obsession. Mr. Fillion, you are currently in very good company. Embrace them and don't be afraid to acknowledge the success of what you're doing now. The Castle infection is spreading and there is no cure. This Scientist predicts a pandemic.

I love Firefly. But, I also understand there will likely be no more. I understand what you are saying. Its great for the occasional shout out, but there is also too much. I think you phrased it perfectly.

I, for one, absolutlely LOVE it. Let me try to put a little 'other' perspective on it.
I wouldn't say he favors the browncoats… I think it's more because he IS a browncoat. That, and Nathan is absolutely constantly bombarded with fans wanting to know if and when there will be more Firefly… a show that's been gone nearly 7 years. I feel kinda bad for him, really. But I also see that while it's likely rather annoying, it's also completely amazing to see the fanbase is THAT crazy about it, still! I'm a new browncoat- I only just watched Firefly this spring- and I am floored at the following this show still has. Hell, I'm proud to join them. It was a GREAT show.
I just love that he is able to acknowledge those fans in little ways. He's just throwing a little bone to the browncoats for being ridiculously loyal and supportive. I think it's awesomely sweet.
Sure, there comes a point when it could get overdone, but I can't see him ever doing it in such a way as to detract from Castle.
**As a sidenote: Boston, sci-fi or no, you should really give it a try. Truth be told, I knew of the show before and wasn't interested because "Sci-Fi Western? Ew." Yeah, well I couldn't have been more wrong. Know what I hate more than anything on TV? Cop shows. But what's my fave show right now?
Firefly is as much about sci-fi as Castle is about procedurals. Sure, it's an element, but it's not what the show is about.**

OfflineI agree with "GreenyJess" who said "I just love that he is able to acknowledge those fans in little ways. He's just throwing a little bone to the browncoats for being ridiculously loyal and supportive. I think it's awesomely sweet."
I am also a recent 'Browncoat' convert. My husband and I were loaned the DVDs from a friend. When I saw the opening sequence, I was not impressed. Now, I can't get enough of 'Firefly' and 'Serenity'. I can't tell you how many times I've watched them. Also, the reason I'm watching 'Castle' is because I'm now a fan of Nathan Fillion. Bought 'Castle' Season One
DVDs because I'm a Nathan and 'Firefly' fan. I think at least some of 'Castle's' success is due to Nathan's loyal fans…I don't think that should be a cause for jealousy by any 'Castle' fan.
I have searched out as much of his earlier work as I can find and I'm either buying it, renting it, or watching online. The reason I'm a loyal 'Castle' fan is because of his earlier work and I think Nathan has done 'homages' or mentions some of his earlier work in many things he's done. In 'White Noise 2' there are references to 'One Life To Live' and 'Capt. Tightpants'.
If someone is not really that strong a fan, why would it bother them? They wouldn't even know there were these references. (Not everyone is on a message board.) Nathan seems a rather playful guy and I, for one, think it's a lot of fun finding the references, in any of his work. And the last one, "hands of blue" was very obscure. I now consider myself a rabid Nathan and 'Firefly' fan, and even after the hint he gave, I didn't find it, and I was looking!
By the way, I'm also a HUGE 'X Files' fan. Rob Bowman, one of 'Castle's' Executive Producers, was on 'The X Files'. When I saw that he was producing, I was even more interested in 'Castle'. Did anyone catch the "Trust No One" phrase in the last episode? Now that is CLASSIC X Files. I'm sure it was an homage. Anyway, I caught it and I was pleased!
Homages by artist have long been used. Many artists put little self portraits in their works. It's a time honored tradition. So, as Nathan might say. "Chillax" people, it ain't that big a deal and it is fun, if you let it be!

OfflineAgree. "Firefly" is not a typical sci-fi. It's much more a western set up in 24th century or so. I'm not a "Browncoat", but I enjoyed it very much when I was watching it last month. Now it's high time to watch "Serenity", this one is still waiting for me to find time to sit down and see it.

OfflineAs a recently converted Browncoat, because I enjoy Castle so much, I completely enjoy the very occasional references to Firefly. I don't look for them..if I catch it, that's fun. If I don't, it's still fun. It doesn't happen in every episode, or even every other episode. I respect and love Nathan for tipping his hat to longtime loyal fans as well as recent "converts." Don't make a mountain out of a tiny molehill that isn't in anyone's way. Just my opinion!

OfflineYep I agree with the above. I've not seen the episode yet but its hardly a huge yell out towards Firefly and only a very loyal Browncoat would have picked it up.
How many other Firefly references have their been Boston? I can't recall any? I do remember Rick making some comment about his Nanny watching One Life to Live when she should have been watching him.
I doubt Nathan does it deliberately, its probably more a case of the writer's putting it in and I'm sure over time there will be loads of references to Nathan's other works and works of the other actors as well.
I'm no fan of sci-fi either Boston but give Firefly a chance, its a lot of fun and I absolutely love it. I only discovered it when I saw Nathan for the first time in the pilot episode of Castle and had to know who he was and then of course track down all his earlier work which led me to Firefly.
I'm quite sure they are all basking in the wondeful success Castle is having and not taking any minute for granted.

OfflinePerhaps the Scientist doesn't enjoy the meta aspect of Nathan Fillion's career, hmm?
Favouring Firefly fans? Obsessed? Naw. "Having fun with" the cult fame that he brings into this show, yes.
Can't wait for next week's episode with his leaping entrance , fully Browncoated.
Speaking of meta…next week Nathan Fillion, as Rick Castle, will (perhaps very briefly) play Mal Reynolds , a character from one of his previous TV lives, in Castle, his current TV acting life. Meanwhile a ghost-written novel by "Rick Castle" is currently on the New York Times bestseller list and the acter who plays Rick Castle has been appearing at book signings. It's a mobius strip of pop culture. Very rich.
I sure hope they promote the heck out of next week's episode because it will likely bring in the show's best ratings this year.
Don't feel left out, Bos. Sci. Give Firefly a try. It aint yer ordinary "sci fi". It so transcends the genre.
