OK here is my take on this. It seems to be only Stana fans who have a problem with the Firefly references and my reply is "get over it!", I'm sure they would have no problem if it was Stana's earlier work being very obscurely referred to? the Firefly references ARE very vague, only a fan would get the hands of blue and the catalyzer was pretty damn hard to spot. So Nathan was dressed as Mal, it was only at the very beginning of the show NOT the whole program. Out of how many episodes have we had, 18 or so, I really don't see how you can call that "constant" references to Firefly.
Please don't let this board turn into a total slinging match with nastiness and back stabbing as I have seen so many boards disintegrante into.
In the long run does it really matter if your a fan of Nathan's or of Stana's? We're all here for the same reason so please stop the constant snipping at each other.
Now can we please move on?

LOL! That's not true in my case. I like both Nathan and Stana equally. As I said earlier, I didn't know who Nathan was prior to Castle and the same goes for Stana.

Neither did I, I'm really glad they put it on after Bones as I may have missed out on this terrific show otherwise but I do tend to gravitate towards all the crime/law shows so probably would have tracked it down anyhow.

I always tend to gravitate towards the law/crime shows too! It seems that it's either that or medical shows. Castle and Bones are my must see shows.

I suppose we should be upset with Molly Quinn too because they reference her new movie A Christmas Carol in the season two premiere? And Seamus and Jon for dressing as characters from their pasts in the Halloween episode.
It seems to me people are making a huge deal out of something that's no deal at all. From what I remember, Halloween episode aside (where as I've pointed out, there were refs. to other cast members' previous work as well) there's only been one Firefly reference in the whole two seasons and that was the "Two by Two Hands of Blue" which I had to freeze frame to even see myself!
I don't know what is fuelling this anti Firefly "rivalry" but it has to stop here now please.
(PS. the "feed the birds" and "bam said the lady" have NOTHING to do with Firefly.)

No one has any problems with the Frank Miller comments, right? So it's ok to reference Stana's previous work but not Nathan's?
Then again, I don't recall hearing gripes about the nods to One Life To Live or Buffy, so it seems to me that people are only griping about the Firefly allusions.
Why so much hating on Firefly? Admin, I am just as baffled as you are. Where is this coming from?
(I'd be willing to bet that most of the ones of you who are griping about Firefly have never seen it. And therein lies the problem. Don't knock it 'til you try it.)

My mother, who is 65 years old….did not like Firefly at all. Just wasn't her thing.
She does enjoy Castle and all the Firefly references go over her head.
If anything, it's the lack of Caslte/ Beckett interaction which is turning her off a little.
I just watch because of Nathan!~
(mom is obvisouly not in the 18-34 demo so her opinion doesn't count)

I tuned into Castle because of the Firefly reference. I was browsing a blog when I came across the trailer for the Vampire Weekend on ABC. I read that there was to be a nod to Browncoats in the episode and as I have been a very proud Browncoat for years, I really loved the idea. I watched the trailer and it wasn't only the Firefly reference I was intrigued by. I could tell the writing was good from a 30 second trailer and Nathan Fillion's character was interesting. I ended up buying season one on DVD and I there starts the love affair with the show.
I may be a Whedonette and a Browncoat, but I won't watch everything a Whedon actor stars in. I won't be watching V just because Morena Baccarin is in it. I don't watch Bones just for David Boreanaz. I didn't watch Wonderfalls just because it was created by Tim Minear. It takes more than the cast and crew to hook me into a show. It takes great writing and an interesting premise to make me switch it on but something has to hook me into it to appreciate what else it has to offer. In the case of Castle, it was the Firefly reference.

First off, I love Firefly! I watched it when it originally aired and was crushed when it was sent out of this 'verse. I am one of those Browncoats that has avidly followed the careers of "me and mine" and as soon as I heard that Capt. Tightpants had a new series, I began to watch. Nathan has an otherworldly sense of comedic timing whether as Mal, Bill Purdy, or Castle. (But he will always be my Mal!)
I'm a gamer too and even though I don't typically play games like Halo 3, I will probably buy it and play it just because some of "me and mine" did voice acting in it.
I am and will always forever be, just a bit hopeful that we may get more adventures from "the black". Niave? Maybe, but in the interim, I am certainly willing to get my fix from watching the crew on whatever shows that they grace their presence with. Each one has a certain charisma that can't be denied, whether it be: Alan Tudyk in iRobot, Dollhouse, or A Knight's Tale – Summer Glau in TSCC or The 4400 – Gina Torres in 24 or Standoff – Adam Baldwin in Chuck – Morena Baccarin in V or Numbers – or – Jewel Staite in Stargate: Atlantis. They are all excellent actors. (I know I left out Ron Glass and Sean Maher, but other than the voice that Ron did in Fable II and the one episode of Ghost Whisperer that Sean did, I haven't really seen them much.)
Anyway…I digress. When I saw Castle transform into Mal on the halloween episode – it MADE MY DAY! As I hooted and hollered for my hubby to come and watch, I had the biggest grin on my face. Before this, I liked the show. Now I think I may be in love! Time to go buy the season one DVDs. So if I get a small nod (or a big one in this case) from my fellow Browncoat from time to time in this show, what is the harm, I ask? If it gets the show more viewers – isn't that what is important?
Forever at the corner of no and where in the black,
Bree

I don't see any issue with the Firefly references for a few reasons. Most importantly, if the references bring in more viewers, thats good for Castle and for us fans. The other reason is that non Browncoats probably won't get the references. For example, I texted my mom after the Halloween episode to ask her if she knew what Castle's first costume was. She had no idea, and I had to explain to her about Firefly.

HA!! Bree, you got more Firefly refs into that post than they got into that entire episode. Shiny.
Now I think they need to come up with a reason for Castle to curse in Chinese, don't you? ;)

I don't have any problems with the Firefly references. Honestly, I don't even see it as being that many. Yeah, a few in the Halloween episode, but the whole cast kind of had various throw backs to their previous work. Stana had the line about Frank Miller, at the party, costumes were a throw back… it wasn't overt or obnoxious.
I admit, I don't want to relive Firefly repeatedly in a discussion about Castle but that is the doing of fans, not Nathan Fillion or the writers of Castle by any means.

Thanks, I try! What will be bad is when I start talking like them in real conversations…I've been sane for a good long while now, maybe it's time for a little crazy. The idea of cursing in Chinese is definitely shiny. Castle could pull it off if anyone could!

Nathan HATED the Chinese, he was talking to Joss about it on the Firefly commentary and agreed the cast could have cheerfully strangled him for it. Joss was totally unrepentent about it.
Welcome Bree, I love Firefly too, I only discovered it when I saw Nathan in Castle and had to back track to get the rest of his movies.

We've had 19 episodes so far, and in ONE of them Nathan Fillion had on the Firefly costume (in an episode that also referenced Nathan's other show Buffy, and Seamus', Jon's and Stana's previous roles, Alexis' movie being mentioned in another episode), the other Firefly references are really too obscure to notice except for the really dedicated, TWO episodes with Firefly references in total, as far as I remember.
Castle reference movies all the time. By chance, I've actually seen Quicksilver with Kevin Bacon. Was that reference annoying for those who's not seen it? I've not seen Cape Fear with Robert deNiro. Could still enjoy the references to it.
So, as itsmyworld said, it's not the show or Nathan, it's the fans that keep bringing up Firefly. Since Firefly has a huge and loyal following, it clever to cater a bit to them.
I didn't know Nathan Fillion outside Firefly and had never heard about Stana Katic, I wouldn't have watched Castle if I didn't see in previews that it was with "the guy from Firefly", (allthough I'm totally a Stanatic by now). So, it's clever by the creators to lure Firefly fans into watching Castle by giving them a little nod. Like they also attracted vampire fans with episode 2x06. And a lot of Alyssa Milano fans will tune in coming next year (she has almost 400000 followers on twitter, and is tweeting with Nathan about Castle, so her fans might be checking out Castle already). Mystery book fans tune in because of Heat Wave. A good and differentiated strategy from ABC.
And since we have different interests, we'll be obsessed by different sides of the show. I think the use of the Firefly costume was hilarious, the scene being very balanced, with Alexis playing the role of the critics on this forum. Personally, I can't understand other fans' obsession about Beckett's hair and clothes, and got tired of those posts within the regular episode discussions. But whenever these kinds of posts have their own thread, I can just skip reading them.
Point is, if we have topics that are a bit on the side, just create a separate thread about it, so people can skip it according to interst.
And cut Nathan some slack. Firefly was the best time of his life, and he meets fans of it all the time. Of course he likes to talk about it with Browncoats. Just like we love to meet here on this forum obsessing about Castle…
