Boston Scientist said:I'm going to try to do this with as much tact as possible for fear of being trampled by a bunch of Browncoats. It bothers me that Nathan continuely tries to reference Firefly in Castle episodes and seems to favor those fans as opposed to fans of his other projects. I get that he loves Firefly and maybe it's his favorite, but I do feel discounted for not having an interest in sci-fi. I happen to be a fan of many of Nathan's other projects and one in particular has emerged as my latest obsession. Mr. Fillion, you are currently in very good company. Embrace them and don't be afraid to acknowledge the success of what you're doing now. The Castle infection is spreading and there is no cure. This Scientist predicts a pandemic. I totally agree. It is giving this show a cult feel. I also see it as a slap at Stana and the other actors. You have a TOny award winning actor in Rueben Santiago Hudson, Stan who has a wonderful movis screen resume but the shout outs are to FIREFLY fans? Tamal Jones is on broadway I believe, Reuben has quite a resume, Stans is a bind girl with many many diverse character portrayals in her resume, but we are subject to Firefly like it was Gone With the Wind. It really needs a lid on it………….no tact here, just straight forward smackdown—-quit it!

OfflineA "cult feel", you've got to be joking? A smackdown? Really. Wow. I hope the writers don't listen to you. I really think the references would go right by someone who isn't tuned in to message boards or Nathan on Twitter, and someone who didn't know his Firefly work.
I guess I don't understand this anger over maybe two "Firefly" references. BTW, I would be watching "Castle" without those references (Firefly and X-Files fan here), just because Nathan Fillion is in it… and because Rob Bowman and now Jose Molina are involved. If Nathan weren't in the show, I might not be watching it.
While I appreciate the other actors, they are not the reason I tuned in. Also, I'm not familiar enough with their other work to know if there are any references to their work. If there were, it wouldn't bother me at all, even if I knew about them. Just fun.
So, maybe you should ask yourself why are you SO angry over the writers, Nathan and his Firefly fans having a little fun? Chill.

As Alexis so aptly put in the Halloween episode…."Space Cowboy?, really Dad, that was five years ago, MOVE ON!"

OfflineOMG! I am so glad that Boston Scientist said what I've been feeling for a while. I just didn't know how to say it and I was afraid of the backlash. I too kind of feel like enough is enough with the whole Firefly thing. I admit that I might feel differently if I had been a fan of that show or of Nathan's prior to Castle. I had never even heard of Nathan before Castle.
I just feel like Castle is a different show from Firefly. I can maybe see some references in the first season to maybe bring over some of those fans, but now that we are in the second season I feel that it's time to let it go. Whether it's Nathan or some of the writers who may or may not have worked on Firefly previously. I also so an article possibly talking about having some old Firefly co-stars guest star on Castle and I thought to myself, "please noooo!" I'm sorry if I offended some Firefly fans, that wasn't my intention.

OfflineOK here is my take on this. It seems to be only Stana fans who have a problem with the Firefly references and my reply is "get over it!", I'm sure they would have no problem if it was Stana's earlier work being very obscurely referred to? the Firefly references ARE very vague, only a fan would get the hands of blue and the catalyzer was pretty damn hard to spot. So Nathan was dressed as Mal, it was only at the very beginning of the show NOT the whole program. Out of how many episodes have we had, 18 or so, I really don't see how you can call that "constant" references to Firefly.
Please don't let this board turn into a total slinging match with nastiness and back stabbing as I have seen so many boards disintegrante into.
In the long run does it really matter if your a fan of Nathan's or of Stana's? We're all here for the same reason so please stop the constant snipping at each other.
Now can we please move on?

LOL! That's not true in my case. I like both Nathan and Stana equally. As I said earlier, I didn't know who Nathan was prior to Castle and the same goes for Stana.

Neither did I, I'm really glad they put it on after Bones as I may have missed out on this terrific show otherwise but I do tend to gravitate towards all the crime/law shows so probably would have tracked it down anyhow.

OfflineI suppose we should be upset with Molly Quinn too because they reference her new movie A Christmas Carol in the season two premiere? And Seamus and Jon for dressing as characters from their pasts in the Halloween episode.
It seems to me people are making a huge deal out of something that's no deal at all. From what I remember, Halloween episode aside (where as I've pointed out, there were refs. to other cast members' previous work as well) there's only been one Firefly reference in the whole two seasons and that was the "Two by Two Hands of Blue" which I had to freeze frame to even see myself!
I don't know what is fuelling this anti Firefly "rivalry" but it has to stop here now please.
(PS. the "feed the birds" and "bam said the lady" have NOTHING to do with Firefly.)

OfflineNo one has any problems with the Frank Miller comments, right? So it's ok to reference Stana's previous work but not Nathan's?
Then again, I don't recall hearing gripes about the nods to One Life To Live or Buffy, so it seems to me that people are only griping about the Firefly allusions.
Why so much hating on Firefly? Admin, I am just as baffled as you are. Where is this coming from?
(I'd be willing to bet that most of the ones of you who are griping about Firefly have never seen it. And therein lies the problem. Don't knock it 'til you try it.)

OfflineMy mother, who is 65 years old….did not like Firefly at all. Just wasn't her thing.
She does enjoy Castle and all the Firefly references go over her head.
If anything, it's the lack of Caslte/ Beckett interaction which is turning her off a little.
I just watch because of Nathan!~
(mom is obvisouly not in the 18-34 demo so her opinion doesn't count)

OfflineI tuned into Castle because of the Firefly reference. I was browsing a blog when I came across the trailer for the Vampire Weekend on ABC. I read that there was to be a nod to Browncoats in the episode and as I have been a very proud Browncoat for years, I really loved the idea. I watched the trailer and it wasn't only the Firefly reference I was intrigued by. I could tell the writing was good from a 30 second trailer and Nathan Fillion's character was interesting. I ended up buying season one on DVD and I there starts the love affair with the show.
I may be a Whedonette and a Browncoat, but I won't watch everything a Whedon actor stars in. I won't be watching V just because Morena Baccarin is in it. I don't watch Bones just for David Boreanaz. I didn't watch Wonderfalls just because it was created by Tim Minear. It takes more than the cast and crew to hook me into a show. It takes great writing and an interesting premise to make me switch it on but something has to hook me into it to appreciate what else it has to offer. In the case of Castle, it was the Firefly reference.
