Just came across a new reivew of Trucker in which there is an entire paragraph talking about Nathan's performance!
http://www.collider.com/2010/0…..vd-review/
Matching her beat-for-beat is Nathan Fillion as Runner, a married Iraq War vet and Ford’s best friend. Presumably by virtue of his experiences in Iraq, Runner is essentially a broken man who has no want or need of anything in life except a few beers throughout the day and to be around Ford as much of the time as possible. Fillion brings his standard playful charisma to the part, but here that charisma is subtly undercut by a sense of emptiness and a quiet desperation. He manages to be charming and pitiable at the same time, a duality that is potently brought to bear in a brilliant, moving exchange with Monaghan’s character near the end of the film; for my money, it’s the movie’s finest scene. Suffice it to say, this is one of the best performances I’ve seen from the former Firefly star, and, as with Monaghan, I hope he gets the opportunity to go this deep into the well more often.

OfflineWhat a lovely piece of a review! And I would with it agree whole-heartedly.
I saw Trucker a couple of weeks ago, and I won't say it was my favorite flick ever… but there were some really nice things about it. For any Nathan fan, it's definitely on the see-it list. Naturally, he was my favorite part of the movie, seeing as I'm a little biased.
What is it about him that makes me root for his character to get the girl, even though he's cheating on his wife?! Just like in Waitress… why is that, I wonder.

No idea GreenyJess but I can't really say I wanted Runner to get the girl in this one, I just couldn't warm to her at all. She treats everyone around her like dirt. Her nasty tirade to Runner about him shooting blanks or something was just mean but I found her very mean spirited through the whole movie. I adored Waitress though.
I really sympathised with her son, having been on the receiving end of such treatment myself. I really felt sorry for him being dumped on a person who quite clearly didn't want him. Even when her ex partner was dying all she could think about was herself.
I did LOL at Nathan's drunk scene and the look of total horror when she gave him tampons to stem the bleeding, that was brilliant and dragging him none to gently up the front stairs, still at least she gave him a pillow. That scene with them making out in the truck was pretty hot though but boo hoo her leaving him high and dry again, mean woman.

OfflineI think we agree completely, Deb.
Trucker, except for a few small ways, doesn't compare with Waitress. I was pretty much agreeing with your last statement there. Yeah, I was really disappointed at how that scene ended… but I can't help be think I shouldn't have been. Just like how I was disappointed with the way Jenna ended everything with Dr. Pomatter. Why should I be disappointed about that? Jenna did exactly the right thing there.
I think that Diane did similarly in that last scene with Runner. She finally decides to be a grown-up, and yet I'm pissed at her for it. She holds out the whole time she knows him, then it looks like she's finally gonna give in… and oh, wait… maybe she shouldn't behave like a skank all the time, after all. You picked a helluva time to figure that out, lady!! And I just feel so cheated. Guh, I blame Nathan.

Yer we'll blame him
but honestly who in their right mind would turn him down?
Dr Pomatter was just adorable, maybe one day I'll get around to finishing the fic I started for them?
Yer definatley wrong time for Diane to grow up, she could have waited an extra day! Runner comment about her 'pretty tits' made me laugh though, that is such a bloke!
Besides Nathan's bits not something I'll probably watch very often.
ontheriver & neodnut we are in total agreeance on that point.
Still I love the fact that Nathan hasn't let his career become pidgeonholed, he does a range of characters, its terrific.

Your as bad a Sarah! I have two fics in my head.
One is 'sweeter' than the other but I'm not sure if I can do 'sweet' so I'm thinking of the second one which is a bit more angsty. Lulu is brought into an emergency ward, she's been hit by a car (no I'm not going to kill her off) and Jim is the Dr on duty that night. He's divorced his wife, it never was much of a marriage and has moved to a slightly larger town.
At first he doesnt' recognise Lulu as she's older, maybe 5 or 6, and badly hurt from the accident. They ring Jenna who of course races to the hospital and runs into Jim again. I've not really got much further than that!
I'll see how it goes, I've lost all my enthusiasm for my writing at the moment. I just can't be bothered with any of it.

Thanks musiclover but I won't post anything on fanfiction.net, there are far too many minors on that site and a particular trouble maker that I wish to avoid.
I have Waitress on DVD, its one of my all time favourite movies.

Waitress is one of my very favoriite movies. Keep it on my IPod for easy viewing!
However, as much as I too was sad that Jenna ended it the way she did, in the line of the movie's message it was quite appropriate. She was stuck in a miserable situation, and needed someone to show her (and make her believe it) that she was better than that. He gave her that. She have him a sort of "peace" with her simplicity that no one else had. They both learned something from the relationship. As did the other women and their situations. I think Adrienne Shelly (who played Dawn) did an awesome job with the screenplay and it's direction. Very sad that she didn't live to see the movies opening and suprising success.
As far as Trucker, I had to watch it twice to figure out what Runner was all about. I think the article at the beginning of this post sums it up well though. He was just a man broken by the war just trying to live day to day. The reason he was so drawn to Diane is that she never wanted or needed him to be more than exactly who he was. They never focused on his wife except when he's passed out on the porch, so it's hard to figure out why he couldn't deal with that anymore. Maybe it was his own guilt and coming back a different man than one she married that made him push her away.
Anyway, just my mini analyzing of his "cheating hubby" characters.

OfflineI saw Trucker this past weekend, and agree completely with the review at the beginning of the thread. It was a really dark movie. Nathan played his role beautifully, and did a great job as the depressed, lonely vet. Indeed, it was hard to feel sorry for the Diane(a?) the lead. Good thing she made the right choices in the end, but most of the story did leave a bad taste.
As far as movies go, I long to see Nathan in more romantic comedies, i.e. Castle-like roles.. playful, funny, charming. I know, I know, that's what we get in Castle, but who's to say one is enough?! I admit it, I want more Castle!
